Thanks for the post Geoff, agree that sales and marketing require a different skillset, attitude and behaviour. Sales and marketing are indeed different functions however, especially if you look at them from the outside-in (e.g. from a customer stand point), they look pretty much the same. Both are supposed to be championing the company, its values, brand strengths and more importantly the business outcomes they can provide to end clients. Granted, sales urgency is probably higher (that damned quota assignment!), but don’t be fooled — the pressure is on on marketing too to deliver fast results, especially with digital and social engagement to markets and clients. Finally, I agree stellar sales manager don’t necessarily make great marketers. Actually, don’t necessarily make great CEOs either (I’ve seen that happening again and again…).
