Though I agree this is not a great article (a rant really), as a response to those in this thread who allow the conservative talking points to dictate their understanding of government, I’d like to set the record straight. Socialism is not totalitarian Communism. This is like saying Capitalism is good because we elect our leaders. The reason often for this confusion is that Socialism was meant as an outcome of Communist revolution, but never happened in any of the communist regiemes oft called Socialist by conservatives. What the outcomes in all of these examples amount to is Dictatorship — which no one is interested in. The confusion between Dictatorship and Socialism serves to support agendas against single payer healthcare, universal incomes, even welfare, social security and medicare. Countries like Canada, Finland and Norway have never suffered Stalinist genocides and are far more ideally Socialist than the USSR was, but that disrupts the McCarthist talking points, so it must not be Socialism…
