It absorbs sweat, wicks moisture, and protects you from friction burns and minor scrapes during training. But like any piece of well-worn equipment, your gi needs proper care to maintain its integrity and hygiene. Here are 7 essential maintenance tips to ensure your BJJ gi stays in top shape:

1. Washing:

  • Frequency: Wash your gi after every training session. Sweat, moisture, and bacteria can build up quickly, leading to unpleasant odors and potential skin irritation. Even if you only drilled techniques, a light rinse is recommended to remove any sweat or salt residue.
  • Warm or Cold Water? Opt for cold water (30°C or 86°F) for most washes. Hot water can shrink the gi and damage the fabric.
  • Detergent: Use a gentle detergent specifically designed for sportswear. Avoid harsh detergents, bleach, or fabric softeners, which can break down the fibers and compromise the gi’s strength and flexibility.

2. Pre-Treatment:

  • Tough Stains: For stubborn blood or mat stains, pre-treat the area with an enzyme cleaner before washing. Follow the instructions on the cleaner and test it on a small inconspicuous area of the gi first.
  • Drying Blood: Never let blood dry on your gi. Rinse the stained area with cold water immediately after training.

3. Drying:

  • Choosing a Rash Guard: Look for long sleeve rash guards made from moisture-wicking materials like polyester or nylon. Consider a long sleeve rash guard for added protection from scratches and mat burn, or a short sleeve rash guard for maximum breathability.

7. Maintaining the Shape:

  • Washing Technique: The way you wash your gi can also affect its shape. Avoid overloading the washing machine and use a gentle spin cycle to minimize wrinkles.
  • Ironing (Optional): If you prefer a crisp look, you can iron your bjj gi on a low heat setting. However, avoid ironing directly on patches or embroidery, as this can damage them.
