are a transatlantic pop folk duo, marrying together the soft melodic tones of soulful Americana alongside infusions of classic acoustic guitar beats. When it comes to writing an original song LOZT have totally owned their art, producing moving and real songs that perfectly capture their experiences with an unmistakably catchy chorus. The duo have self-released their debut EP, I Want You, the product of a two-year adventure the two have undergone together.

Gigride caught up with vocalist Lauren Scudder back in December of 2017 when the two were hard at work, playing shows around London and nearby cities in the UK. Now they’ve codified their experience into a blissful four-track EP that sees them repaint their carefully drawn songs with a broader brush.

Anyone who has seen LOZT play live knows that their outfit consists of Scudder on vocals with Tom Ryder on vocals and acoustic guitar. On the EP, the duo enrich their songs by adding more instruments including keys, drums, and strings to their arrangements. On the first track, “Change My Mind”, Scudder and Ryder trade verses and meet harmoniously in the chorus over a light, carefree rhythm. The song’s betrayed lovers call each other out in a tongue-in-cheek manner. “Quake” takes on a more somber tone. Clouds reminiscent of the EP’s cover art hang over the song’s tempestuous relationship. The track receives a remix from BAXT in which the tempo is sped up, the vocals are playfully pitched, and the chorus becomes a danceable electronic groove. On title track, “I Want You”, Scudder and Ryder show off the true clarity of their vocals and the richness of their harmonies. They’re accompanied by a dramatic string arrangement that ebbs and flows beneath like waves under a moonlit sky.

The I Want You EP is a snapshot of LOZT’s capacity for smart, simple, catchy songwriting. It’s a satisfying listen for fans of the duo who appreciate the chance to hear them away from the chatter of a bar, or who simply want to play their songs over and over again.
