Salvadorean Born. Los Angeles Raised
My family came to the United States escaping from a civil war which tore apart El Salvador for more than 12 years. Even though they are now citizens of both the United States and El Salvador, they have always felt more comfortable interacting with news in Spanish. Outlets include Univision and Telemundo are favorites. Now, with the constant rise of social media, they follow these same outlets on social media platforms like Facebook and Instagram. I feel like watching these news media helped be become more grounded as a person and more informed because I am able to look at news from different perspectives. The mediums I chose reinforced this belief are El Salvador Dia a Dia, which focuses more in the community of Salvadorians, Univision, which sees the entire Latino community and Latino LA! because it seems like it establishes a sense of community.
Ethnic media is produce to channel news to groups depending on their ethnicity, religious beliefs, immigration status and language. The purpose of ethnic media, as stated by the article “One Nation with News for All” is to give minorities a chance to speak out issues that directly impacts them. The same news can be told from different angles, for example a mainstream media outlet can speak about an issue and an ethnic media platform can speak about the same issue but from another perspective. A parallel internet might shift that in a sense that communities would feel more comfortable on sticking with the language and community they are from instead of branching out and experiencing American culture.
