Weekly Writing Challenge: Week #2

So here I am with the second week of hitRecord.org’s Weekly Writing Challenge.

Week #2: Write a poem inspired by a photo on the site.

I drew inspiration from the photo as well as the photo’s title — “Damsel in the Night.”

This is the photo I chose to use:

I have not written a poem in years. I don’t know if I used the punctuation correctly in this. Hell, I don’t even know if this is an acceptable format for a poem! But here it is…

— — —

I am a damsel of the night.

The moon and stars and quiet call to me;

they seduce me into avoiding slumber.

As people forfeit the wee morning hours to the sandman,

I am sitting lost inside my head.

My mind’s thoughts are malleable;

I shape them and reshape them over and over and over again.

I am a damsel of the night;

rescued by her own late night musings.

Some nights my mind is vulnerable;

loneliness seeps in and I doubt my nighttime habits.

Other nights I emerge victorious under a darkened sky;

I have thought and created and enjoyed.

Now I will sleep in preparation for the next night to come.

I am a damsel of the night.
