A question that I get pretty often is what’s data science?
Data science, also known as data-driven science, is an interdisciplinary field about scientific methods, processes, and systems to extract knowledge or insights from data in various forms, either structured or unstructured, similar to data mining. -Wiki
Whoa, pretty scary stuff..
There is a more pragmatic way of thinking about it.. It began with computer programming enabling the execution of binary logic indefinitely (theoretically). In the context of a technology company, it means that the service could be used by the mass population. A simple example is a website, the exact same logic is shipped to anyone who visit it.
Continuing the example of a website, the creator of the website will get more data with more people visiting their website. Yes, they have data!
With new data, is it possible to improve the logic of the website? How so? That’s data science. A classical example is Netflix, piggybacking on it’s user’s behaviour data they are able to build better recommendation engine.
Of course, the rewriting of the logic using data is a scientific process very often involving some mathematics and lots experimentation hence science.
