Why Reading is still important

Read to have better conversation…

As I wondered past the halfway mark of the Go-Jek Software Engineering BootCamp, I realised how shallow my understanding of the book, The Pragmatic Programmer: From Journeyman to Master was. Admittedly, I read it during my daily commute and was probably sub-optimal. Nevertheless, having the information but not internalising it was still pretty painful. Have I wasted my time picking up the book? Have all my previous reading gone to waste?

As I ponder deeply into this issue. I realise that having read the book allowed me to form cognitive connection to the concepts as they were presented. A sad truth about human unlike machine is that our mechanism transfer of information is flawed. Some information/knowledge is lost when it was penned down and more are watered down when we read it. The good thing about reading is that it incept certain ideas, concepts into our brain. That enable us to start conservations with people who are more experienced or experience events that would help us internalise the learnings or concept.

For most people, reading won’t make you a subject expert but it empower you to have conversations with the people who are.

Start reading today for a deeper conversation tomorrow :)
