This week was more about finding outside sources that relted to my project. I really loved how easy it was because it seems to be an issue that is all over our world today. I ran into one particular source that I really like that I will share below. Danielle Moss Lee, a chief executive officer of the YWCA of the city of New York really gives insight and her own personal power list to help transition to college.
- You Deserve To Be There: she talks about the worst advice she ever heard from a school counselor to a grop of students of color that they would be guest on their campuses and should behave as such. Making it seem as students of color do not have good home training and do not know how to behave in professional settings. It was a constant reminder to them that they did not belong. I can’t believe that she heard the comment from her neighbor that she might be “taking the spot” of some deserving white student to the college she attend as if she did not work as hard to get there as well. It is comments like this that really discourage incoming students making them feel like they do not belong or deserve to be there.
- The Hidden Curriculum: Some kids come from a background where they were educated in “black and white.” Their schools did not offer them the opportunity to receive exposure to other cultures. While other kids come from being educated in “high-definition color” meaning their schools were very focused on college prep and causing a lot of competition between students. She speaks about how important it is to break these patterns and go out and learn in real life experiences.
- Be Authentic:You do not have to try to change yourself to fit in with others. She brings up the eample of going as far as washing your hair every day untl it turns brittle because you are too scared to explain how black hair works and we do not need to wash it everyday. She says that some students do not want to be judged by their classmate so they avoid making relationships with students of color which is not right. You should be able to be yourself and by doing so you will attract even better relationships.
- You’re Not the National Spokesperson for Everyone Who Looks Like You: I think every student of color has had an experience where they might be the only or one of the few minority students in their class and when a subject comes up where they are talked about everyone turns and looks at them. Students should not be forced to speak out for an entire perspective unless they feel comfortable doing so.
- Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?: People love being around where they feel comfortable and where they feel they can relate easily to epople around them. Once they feel comfortable then it becomes easier for them to branch out!
I was not able to address everything she talked about in her power list however I summarized her main points and what I thought was most important. Being a first year student I think many of these points were every helpful we deserve to be here just liek any other student. Only by knowing the issues are we able to overcome them!
