I think you are making a couple of assumptions about the Google products you list above:

  1. That they failed — the killing of products for Google is much more about Prioritization than it is because the product failed.
  2. That design is what caused them to fail — not the fact they solved a problem they didn’t have, or failed because of an external force such as a competitor etc.
