TODAY I CHOOSE TO BE HAPPY

There are days when you’re just not feeling it. Every task is challenging, your body is tired, and every thought that comes to your mind is depressing.

For such a long time I’ve let myself be defeated by this feeling, to spiral into a state of inactivity and negativity. The day ends and I’m no better, even worse, because I got nothing done and spiral more into that unproductive dark place.

But I’m an adult now and that means taking control of my life and not letting every negative emotion get in my way. I found a very effective method to convince myself to overcome the feeling and get on with whatever it is that I need to do. I simply choose to be happy and write it down in words.

Here’s one that I wrote during one particularly bleak day:

I have decided that today I will be happy. I may have many problems but I will not let them stop me from doing the things I need and want to do.

I am in control of my life. I will not let the worries of the past get in the way of achieving my dreams. I will be productive today. I will be resourceful today. I will be positive. I will spread my happiness so that others may also be happy.

I will take my energy and let it drive me towards conquering this day. I will accomplish many things today. I will be fulfilled today. I will do each task with zeal and enthusiasm.

I will be curious. I will speak my mind. I will be courageous. I will not be afraid of what others will think of me. I will be strong.

I will be respectful. I will be courteous and helpful. I will smile at people.

I was genuinely amazed at how quickly my mood had changed. It’s like letting go of a heavy weight after holding on to it for such a long time. My mind and my body moved really fast. At the end of the day, I had accomplished so much and felt so fulfilled.

We have more control of our lives than we know and we should never let our past drag us down. We may not be able to come to terms with them completely but we can always choose to leave them behind for even just a day. This way, we can be free from the baggage and be happy and productive.

And when the day ends and we get reminded of our worries, we can always start over tomorrow.
