Substance abuse is one of the most common health problems in the United States. It is estimated that substance abuse affects approximately 15% of all Americans. In addition, it is estimated that approximately 10% of all adults have some sort of substance abuse problem. This means that there are roughly 3 million Americans who have a substance use disorder and another 1 million who suffer from a secondary addiction as well as those who are incarcerated for their substance use or dependency issues.

Many people who have substance abuse problems also suffer from other mental health issues that may affect their ability to stay clean and sober. These include: bipolar disorder, anorexia nervosa, depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and eating disorders such as bulimia. These conditions all make the need for recovery more difficult to accomplish and may even block the ability to overcome the problem.

In addition, many people confronting substance abuse problems also suffer from other mental health disorders that may be associated with their drug or alcohol use. These conditions include: anxiety disorders like generalized anxiety disorder, social phobia, panic disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD).
