Let’s Make ASCII Art

An easy way to create art in the terminal

ASCII art is an image composed of text characters. It can be simple, complex, monochromatic, or colorful. I don’t know if it’s just nostalgia for the BBS days or an appreciation of low-res computer art, but I LOVE it.

ASCII art overlay on a colorful background

Here’s how to do it on a Mac:

1. Install ascii-image-converter

  • brew install ascii-image-converter

2. Convert an image

  • ascii-image-converter image.png

3. Highlighted tags

  • -C Preserves color
  • -c Makes a complex ASCII
  • -h Learn about all of the tags
