My family in the MS Delta was shocked and scandalized to hear that I was an enthusiastic Obama supporter. They had sent me off to the Navy as a young and strong conservative, steeped in the culture of the Deep South (our family line was buried in a local cemetery all the way back to 1870)…and now I came home as a far-left liberal who (gasp!) actually voted for a black family to live in the White House. They still welcomed me…but the conversations were much different than before, for now they felt pressured to refrain from using all the racist language they normally used every day of their lives.
