Online Groups as Canary for Niche News

If you’re an active participant in any online community, you’ll notice that the group almost always gets the scoop faster than anywhere else. Whether it be news, or your FB feed, or blogs, a group is really the best way to stay on top of news. I think Twitter is the only news source that’s faster but it’s so noisy anyway that a normal human will find it difficult to tap into that stream of consciousness.

Case in point: Reddit. If you ever want the rawest or raw footage for a news item this is the place to go. Not only that, it’s also the best place to go to if you want an easy way to stay on top of that piece of news. Sometimes you’ll even see the genesis of a new movement in a group, learning about news even before it happens.

Why am I writing about this? Well for one, if you want to learn about a niche very quickly, a group like the ones in Facebook will let you dive right in. Not only can you quickly get up to speed on what the niche is about (admins usually sticky a list of curated links to common questions), you also consume the news before it gets out in the wild.

(on a side note, this must be why Facebook groups about stock and forex trading are very popular)

Another is if you want to become an influencer in a niche, you need to join groups. Being the first to get to a story means you can participate in it ahead of the rest and be seen as a thought leader when it comes to that topic.
