His story-Marcus Garvey,forgotten?

My heart sank into the mire of despondence yesterday as I watched people from around the world went about doing their customary functions. I paused. I pondered. Why was the place so quiet? Where was the fanfare? No viral messages being heralded on social media platforms. It was Garvey’s birthday-yet no stories were told of him. After all,it was not entertainment so young people were not interested in it.

But that is the problem! They need to hear the stories of the great leader, intellectual and quintessential man called Marcus Garvey. Say that name to a young person today and they are in oblivion. Garvey, a Black Nationalist, Pan-Africanist and visionary, who posited for Black empowerment and liberation. He made Blacks to feel proud of who they were and of their image.

“The black skin is not a badge of shame but rather a glorious symbol of national greatness…”

“Liberate the minds of men and ultimately you will liberate their bodies” Marcus Garvey

The way in which Blacks operate today, would make Marcus Garvey turn in his grave. Such disdain. Youths today have forgotten the story of Marcus Garvey, their history. They want no association with such a great culture that afforded them the privileges they now have today.

“A people without the knowledge of their past history, origin and culture is like a tree without roots” Marcus Garvey

Will this generation learn his story? Their history? Or will they continue to choose darkness?
