As I as a child I was taught the rote method of how to achieve success and happiness: staying and getting a good education. But after achieving some level of education, I asked myself the question, does having an education make you happy? Well after reflecting the answer is no! Why would do you say this one may ask, I will answer that question by the end of the blog.
Happiness is define as “the state of being happy or contented”. Individuals often posit that if they achieve the following goals they would be happy, but very seldom this happens:
- Getting married-they think if they find the right person to be their spouse, then all their problems will disappear. Ironically, some marriages cause unhappiness, pain, hurt and all the other antonyms of happiness you may think of.
- Lose weight- so you are dissatisfied with your weight and you decide that you need to lose weight so you will be happy. What if you lose weight and you are still not happy?
- Getting an education-statistics have shown that there are a lot of “educated” people who are unemployed. Many graduates have left college only to learn that no job is available for them.
- Getting a Job-on the other hand, let’s say you get a job as a result of your education, but after 2 or 3 years you become discontent with your job;it is fair to say then that education provides limited happiness.
- Make a million dollars- many persons have become millionaires are still not happy. I guess money doesn't bring happiness.
Education makes us able to have access to the means of happiness. It provides social prestige, traveling, job etc. Entrepreneurship has now brought me success and happiness. Building one’s personal wealth and doing what one has a passion for is arguably one of the best way in pursuing happiness.
I would like to encourage you to make decisions and act on them this year rather than to make resolution, which often fail to materialize.
