If you are new in the world of podcasting, the idea of doing everything on your own can be very tempting. Understandably, you’d want to make sure everything is taken care of accordingly.

However, doing everything on your own can be counterproductive. Even if you are an expert at everything, at one point or another, it will become impossible for you to do everything by yourself.

Chris Ducker, author of the book Virtual Freedom: How to Work with Virtual Staff to Buy More Time, Become More Productive, and Build Your Dream Business identified 3 tasks that should be delegated:

  1. Tasks you shouldn’t do
  2. Tasks you can’t do
  3. Tasks you don’t like doing

Understandably, the list can be different from one podcaster to another. As a general rule of thumb however, you should not do things that will hinder you from doing your primary focus as a podcaster — creating superb content!

To help you out, here’s a list of podcasting tasks you should and shouldn’t delegate:

Tasks You Should Delegate

  • Show notes writing — apart from giving listeners an insight into the episode, show notes are also used to improve search engine optimisation (SEO) and encourage better engagement. Fortunately, you don’t have to adapt an “all or nothing” approach to show notes writing. If you still want to incorporate your input, you can still do so by providing a basic outline and have someone else take care of the rest.
  • Post production — for many podcasters, editing can be likened to a leech — it sucks the life out of them. There’s no denying editing is a painstaking and time-consuming process. It will entail a lot of effort, time, and expertise. Unless you are an expert in podcast editing, this task is best left in the hands of the best podcast editor you can find. The best podcast editor can help ensure everything is done perfectly and right on schedule.
  • Design — if you’re a professional designer, this is something you can effortlessly do. However, since it will still take up a lot of time, it would be best to leave the visual branding to a professional. This can include designing your podcast logo, cards, art, etc.

Tasks You Shouldn’t Delegate

  • Content creation — conceptualisation, research, and preparation of content is something you alone should do. After all, it’s your podcast so it should carry your authentic input and voice. While it’s okay to ask for insights, ideas, and suggestions from others, the final say should always come from you.
  • Relationship building — regardless if it’s with sponsors, guests, or listeners, building and nurturing relationships should be something you should personally do.

Without doubt, podcasting can come with a few unique challenges. Thankfully, there is no shortage of expert help available at your disposal. What podcasting tasks do you usually delegate? Let me know about them in the comments section below.
