R.I.P. GOP: 1854–2016

I’ve been watching for a long time now as you, the Grand Ole Party has died a slow and painful death. It’s over now, there is no more Republican party. That’s right, you are dead.

Let’s be real, you did some great things, you ended slavery; we are all grateful for that. You sent the first woman to the house in Jeannette Rankin. You desegregated our public schools, such a noble and great thing. Not long ago a Republican appointed the first African-American woman to the position of Secretary of State in Condi Rice. These are all great things to have on your resume but it is all over now.

To be honest, I’m not necessarily happy you are gone, but at the same time, I am not really sad to see you go. In fact I saw this coming, I left you long ago and I am proud that I did, long before this election. No, I didn’t run out and join the Democrats. I wondered around in the wilderness for a while and found myself in the Libertarian party. Yes, the Libertarian party, the party that stands for many of the things you were supposed to. The forgotten principles of freedom, liberty and the individual.

Let me be clear here, when I say you are dead, I don’t mean that you were killed. The Democrats did not defeat you; you committed suicide. Throughout your life as a party you have claimed to be the party of freedom and liberty, yet you gave us the Patriot Act. You gave us the Bush bailouts.

Then you tried to sell the people on John McCain, because he was “electable” he lost. Then it was, vote for Mitt Romney, because he is “electable” he can beat Obama. He lost as well. You keep nominating people for President and Congress who do not resemble our founders in any way shape or form.

The fear mongering you brought us, led us into the military industrial complex. You have continually tried (with the help of Democrats) to police the globe and gotten us involved in unconstitutional wars. We are tired of giving up our rights for a little bit of your so called “security.”

Should I even mention your treatment of Ron Paul in the 2012 primaries? Finally a Republican was gaining ground, preaching the principles of liberty and you would have nothing to do with it. Just ask his Maine delegates at the 2012 convention.

Now, you have gone so far that you have a statist as your Presidential nominee. Make no mistake, your aforementioned list of grievances and many more have caused and made this possible. Yes, you brought this on yourself.

You have angered your party so much that a man who didn’t know what the nuclear triad is, is now your nominee. A man that thinks we are to cautious in using our nuclear weapons is your nominee. A man who believes in tariffs (google Smoot-Hawley, to see how that works out) is now your nominee. A man who believed a “National Enquirer” story to be truth, is now your nominee.

Because of all of this we have seen a mass exodus from your party. People are fleeing your Grand Old Party like you have the plague. For far to long you have become more and more like the Democratic party, to the point that it is hard to tell the difference between the two of you.

As I said, I’m not necessarily happy to see you go but I hope your slow painful death gives our country what it so desperately needs, more choices. I hope my own Libertarian party gains more relevance and is able to elect more of our candidates. I hope more “third parties” arise out of your ashes as well. We need more voices and sadly your voice became more and more like your sworn enemy, the Democrats.

My Eulogy is now over. I’m sorry I couldn’t be more kind. Rest in peace, Grand Old Party 1854–2016.
