We are delighted to share a blog written by student null Okonkwo Princess from Greensprings school Anthony, who is part of a team delivering a Global Goals project for the 2019–20 Global Goals Competition.
Their project is among over 957 social action projects created as part of the GSL movement and we are excited to be supporting them to design and lead positive social change in their community.

It was soul lifting

Project Summary

The save the face of lagos team looked at the communities in lagos and chose Makoko as a community they wanted to help. In the Makoko community we wanted to help them to have a cleaner environment.

Your Journey

On the 25th of May, 2019. The save the face of Lagos team went to the Makoko community. To implement the dustbins as part of their project. On that day there was a ceremony which started with an opening prayer then Princess Okonkwo the group leader gave a brief introduction which explained why we were there before handing over to the LAWMA official Mr Akinbulo, who explained the importance of waste disposal while speaking on the effects of improper waste disposal. Then the bins were given to the community in which the youth leader of Makoko(Mr Raphael) received them. The 8 bins were that of the 240 litres wheeler bins which had the group’s name on it and were purchased with the sponsor ship of these people: Mrs Deji Omotayo- 2 bins(40,000 naira) Mrs Ajaero- 2 bins(39,000 naira) Mrs Opaleye-2 bins( 40,000 naira) Mrs Adegbite- 1 bin(20,000 naira) Mrs Udolisa- 2bins (40,000 naira) Mrs Adeola- 10,000 naira Mrs Harrison- 10,000 naira Mrs Giwa Arowolo- 19,500 naira Total money sponsored: 218,500 naira The money not used In purchasing the bins was used to buy cartons of waste bags which will be given to the community every month while the LAWMA truck will come to pick up their waste weekly. The whole event was aired live on national tv. The group leader was interviewed for a newspaper article on reasons for the project. After the event of educating them. The bins were put in five spots and the team went round the community encouraging the people in the community to dispose of their waste while also helping them to pick up their waste. The event was successful as after the picking of waste the LAWMA truck was there to take the refuse to the dump site.

Project Summary

Yes, I would advise them to do projects which uplifts various communities around them. They should get advise from various experts in different fields concerning the project they want to carry out because it would enable them to carry out the project successful and it would allow for them to take notice of steps that need to be carried out.
