Findworka Academy 2.0: Technical training with a difference

Findworka Academy is a 3-month training & fellowship program designed to groom the next generation of technical leaders. The Findworka Academy seeks to increase the quality of tech talents in the tech ecosystem by providing learning opportunities for individuals who are interested in delving into tech or looking at expanding their knowledge base. The academy which is in its third year of running already boasts a number of alumni who have gone on to take up junior developer roles in exciting tech startups upon completion of the programme. The training is followed by a 3-month internship placement for students. After the internship, employers can choose to retain interns as full-time employees.

Led by experienced developers, courses taught in this cohort were: Frontend Development i.e HTML, CSS, Javascript (React JS); Backend Development i.e HTML, CSS & PHP (Laravel); Mobile Development i.e React Native; Data Science with Python i.e Python; and, UI/UX Design.

Following a successful round of application, interviews, and award of scholarships to deserving candidates, the training began on October 26, 2019, with an orientation exercise moderated by Mr. Wilfred Ekpo (COO, Findworka). The students were given a rundown of the schedule for the academy and what was expected of them during the training, as well as post-training plans.

The training was designed to be practical-oriented with a student-teacher ratio which ensured that the students enjoyed an inter-personal relationship with their trainer in a conducive learning environment.

Part of personal development plans in this cohort saw the students have a soft skills session with the Community Relations Manager, Glory Ejike. The students also had classes on Intellectual Property and Contract Law as part of their training. They were handled by the Community Relations Manager. The students were tutored on people skills in the workplace, contractual rights and liabilities, and intellectual property rights and protection. This was aimed at ensuring that the students had well-rounded technical training and were job-ready at the end of the Findworka Academy program.

Having recognized the need for even development across board, we opened up participation in the programme to students across and beyond Nigeria through our Findworka Academy Online platform. An additional 90 students enrolled on the platform and took courses.

At the end of February 2020, the Academy produced a total of 22 graduates; of that number, 82% were trained on full scholarship courtesy Findworka.

Apart from internship placement with the most exciting tech startups in our ecosystem, other benefits of attending the Findworka Academy include: an updated curriculum; proper training of developers by developers; a committed faculty; emphasis on job-readiness; invitation to our annual Saucecode Hackathon; and exclusive access to premium developer tools.
