DESIGNING FINNISH METAL MUSIC

I have a confession to make here, I didn’t go to this lecture, and the worst thing that I wasn’t planning to. I’m quite narrow minded here, but I didn’t go just because the very thought of metal music makes me nauseous. In Russia we have a long history of metal music(I must emphasize here, in Russia, can’t say about other countries) and this community is so big, that I would divide music tastes like this-pop 59%, rock 40%, and metal is 80% of the latter, other 1%. The worst thing about it is that top bands there take the worst patterns from pop music culture, in addition promote this badass lifestyle,which supposed to come along with the very deep and brave soul, but usually it doesn’t, in the end we have groups of passive-aggressive teens with distorted values, no interest in education and lots of bad habits.

This phenomena is extremely strange, since for me music is a vital component of every person’s spiritual life and every music movement has its culture and history, so I can’t say how this situation with russian metal occurred, but I even had a micro research. Around 8 years ago I got to know a group of teens (11 pers) whose main interest was metal music, all other aspects of life were formed around it, personal views, friends, lifestyle, hobbies, appearance. Nowadays several people left this group, found other interests in life, not related so strongly to their music preferences. As for those who stayed: 3 single mom’s, 2 of which had never worked, live and fully supported by their retired parents, 5 drop-outs from schools, all-never tried to get a higher education, 4 drug addicts. Of course you can’t judge people with these social criterias, so I hope they have those deep and brave souls after all.
