Synonyms

A synonym is a word that has a similar meaning as another word. For example: hat/cap, listen/hear. Using synonyms is a useful way to expand your vocabulary and learn more words.

The world would be very dull if there were only one word to express a particular thought. If every person, place, or object could only be expressed with the same word over and over again then reading, writing, and speaking would be extremely boring.

Luckily, we have synonyms which add spice and flavor to our communication skills.

  • She is an excellent student.
  • She is a strong student.
  • The reason is unimportant.
  • The reason is irrelevant.
  • I need to contemplate the consequences.
  • I need to consider the consequences.

However these words are not always interchangeable and you need to consider different things before using one of them, such as:

Using synonyms in your writing allows you to vary syntax and make your writing more interesting.

The more synonyms you know, the better your background vocabulary and understanding of words in the English will be.
