The party will fall in line.

I’m a member of the much maligned Never Trump movement. Donald Trump could put Jesus Christ himself on the ticket as Vice President, promise to appoint Ted Cruz to the Supreme Court and make John Bolton Secretary Defense and I still wouldn’t vote for him. There are others like me, who I trust will not cave in and vote for the detestable Mr. Trump. Folks like Jonah Goldberg, Kevin Williamson, and Glenn Beck. They are admirable for their intellectual consistency and moral clarity in steadfastly opposing Trump.

But let’s not kid ourselves. As much as we imagine there being large swaths of ideological conservative and libertarians who will hold strong to principle and oppose Trump all the way through November, the facts are that there just aren’t many of us. When it comes right down to it, almost the entirety of the Republican Party will end up voting for Donald Trump. The fact of the matter is, most voters do not take this stuff nearly as seriously as those of us who are political junkies. Your average voter is not George Will. Most folks are going to vote party loyalty.

Over the next six months, you’re going to see Trump make a hard pivot to win over all the folks he’s alienated. Women and hispanics, particularly. And the Republican powers that be will be working the phones to get the big money donors to come on board. In addition, the Republican establishment will push hard for one of their chosen ones to be selected as Vice President. By November, I predict in the neighborhood of 90% of the Republican Party that remains will end up voting for Trump.

So brace yourself for the inevitable, just don’t sell your soul and join them.
