This is all well and good, but somehow it is also very familiar. There has long been a “Limits to Growth” school of thought, and in one form or another, it may be almost correct, but there is a problem. The problem is quite simply that while we all know that a more socialistic, less individualistic culture is necessary to the long-term survival of our species, the tribal, “every man for himself and the devil take the hindmost,” wealth-creation model has always prevailed in human culture. There have been no long-term successes of socialistic, altruistic, universalist cultures. The latter simply are contrary to the human nature for which evolution has selected our DNA. We like to think that we are rational creatures but logical argument cannot settle this question. In the end, we will resort to the time-honored human tradition of violence, and this time, given our technological success, violence will settle the question for all time: it will end us.
