The Metamorphosis of Todoroki
What Episode 59 of “My Hero Academia” reminded me of Todoroki.
I must admit that I was quite disappointed with how Shoto Todoroki reacted to Inasa Yoarashi in last week’s episode of MHA. While it was evident that their dispute was incited and largely bolstered by Yoarashi — Todoroki was even trying to let go of the argument — Todoroki shouldn’t have allowed himself to be so manipulated by Yoarashi in the midst of the licensing exam. What intrigued me most about the episode, however, was how it subtly emphasized the evolution of Todoroki’s personality. No one in the series has changed more drastically then the “half-cold half-hot” prodigy.
Todoroki seemingly turned into a whole new person ever since his match with Midoriya at the U.A. Sports Festival. As a result of him finally accepting and utilizing his left side, he became less frigid while retaining his cool attitude as a character. He also became more thoughtful and less distant.
While the rest of the Class 1-A students have undoubtedly grown, their nature as characters hasn’t transformed. Izuku Midoriya, now exercising his quirk in a more creative yet safe fashion, is still as meek as he is modestly tenacious. Katsuki Bakugou remains both reckless and intelligent. However, we’re able to witness a mild and reflective side from him whenever he contemplates the relationship between Midoriya and All Might. Ochaco Uraraka might be the most kawaii female character, but she’s arguably the most badass one as well. Episode 22 showed us exactly how aggressive and passionate she can get, even when competing against someone as intimidating as Bakugou. But don’t let that give you any ideas. I swear, if I see one more picture of those two embracing or gazing into each others eyes… It’s no secret that she wants her some of that Midoriya. Fuck Bakugou! (Or not.)

These examples act as revelations of their personalities’ nuances. They aren’t presented as a distinct departure from their original identities though. That’s why Todoroki is so interesting. Tenya Lida is still a serious leader. Tsuyu Asui is still the ultimate wifu. But Todoroki, especially as one of the main protagonists, isn’t noticeable or lively until he’s in action, where he shines above the rest. He’s a somewhat passive yet truly developed character who endeavors to overcome the troubles of his own conscience. It’s because of this that he can be deemed the best character of MHA.
