When it comes to upgrading engine performance, the main goal is to propel more power in your engine while maintaining the efficiency of the engine. Once the engine’s output is upgraded then it is known as Supercharger. These are specifically designed air compressors which are used to force oxygen in compressed form into the combustion engine. The oxygen added can be used to burn more fuel per engine cycle and therefore, in turn, increases overall engine power. Superchargers are designed mechanically with the use of engine crankshaft via belt, chain, gear, shaft axial or radial gas turbines.

Types of superchargers

There are two main types of superchargers used mainly known as dynamic superchargers and positive displacement superchargers. These superchargers are added in high-performance engines. The main key difference in these two types of superchargers is the way by which air compression takes place. In case of positive displacement type superchargers, the pressure delivered is constant and divided within the supercharger while the air gets deposited into the engine. There are for backflow in types of pumps used in superchargers namely scroll type, sliding vane, twin screw and roots. Superchargers have completely changed the way engine performance can be enhanced and there are various types of supercharger kit available in the market depending on the type of supercharger chosen.

How do superchargers work?

Roots superchargers have external compression pumps and allow the pressure intake to overcome the pressure that comes from a supercharger that allows the pressure to go back into the supercharger. The pressure-induced due to backflow is what compresses the gas power and these pumps are not that effective as the internal compression but quite efficient in moving the air at low pressure. Positive displacement pumps use internal compression that helps in compressing air within the supercharger and sends it to the engine at a fixed compression ratio. This compression ratio must be controlled because of the possibility of a backflow as it takes away the efficiency of the engine as soon as the compression pressure exceeds. The third type of supercharger is the dynamic compressor. It is intended to deliver high pressure at high speed and power with the help of gas turbines. Dynamic compressor excites air at a higher rate and exchanges the speed with the engine for air pressure. As the engines get more pressure, the air velocity of the supercharger will produce to exchange with the engine.

Superchargers vs Turbochargers

Both turbochargers and superchargers are used to increase the power output of the engine but both are powered in a different way. The main difference lies in the way they both power the engine. Superchargers are powered directly by the engine while the turbochargers are mainly powered by the engine exhaust. Superchargers can reach top speed quickly and have higher throttle while the turbochargers can gain higher fuel efficiency and power.

Conclusion

If you are looking to improve your engine performance then adding a supercharger is a good idea. The engine driven with the help of supercharger can run smoothly and at a faster speed compared to a turbocharger. Still confused which type of supercharger kit can be useful for your car?
