The tradition of butter sculptures started in 1903, when the very first butter cow and calf sculptures entered into a butter sculpting competition sponsored by Ohio State University, and the Dairy Processors of Ohio were showcased at the fair. The idea of the Ohio State Fair was first acted in September 1849; however, due to the outbreak of Asiatic cholera led to its cancellation.
The main debut happened in the year 1850 at Camp Washington, situated two miles east of downtown Cincinnati, from October 2 to 4th, 1850. Spanning 8 to 10 acres, the site featured grassy slopes, shade-providing trees, and numerous tents enclosed by a 10-foot-high board fence. Cattle were tethered along the carriage road.
