There is a free CMS program for digital signage called Rise Vision. Their software can run on a Fire Stick. This could allow you to create a playlist that you could control from the web. Rise vision allows you to insert custom HTML and has a bunch of free widgets too.

Other ideas for content could be social media feeds and google calendar. One thing we’ve struggled with is getting RSS feeds to spit out meaningful headlines. So we’ve transitioned to broadcasting different twitter handles to get our news. To not have to deal with the twitter API, you can use IFTTT or Zapier.
