So I started a company, a tabletop game publishing company. Now to just design some games and press launch on some Kickstarter pages and then I can quit my job and make games for a living. Ha, If only it were that easy…
First off let me introduce myself, my name is Cody Thompson and I love board games, entrepreneurship and making the world a better place. Along with some other things, but these will be the focus of this blog series. Now that I am a few months from launching my first Kickstarter I wanted to go back and reflect on the path that brought me here. Starting with October 23rd, 2017.
This was the date I finally decided after about six months of falling in love with board games, that I wanted to do something else with my life. At the time my current job as an Architectural Drafter at a small firm in Tacoma Washington (five people including myself) just wasn’t feeding my creative and entrepreneurial soul. I found myself some days in the office researching board games for up to 6 hours, learning all I could about tabletop game design and publishing. I remember just being in awe about how I didn’t even know this wonderful world existed.
I think that my board game rabbit hole started with Tom Vasel and the Dice Tower, but quickly grew to other outlets like the Board Game Business Podcast and Jamey Stegmaier’s blogs. It has since expanded to what I feel like is every boardgame podcast and blog on the planet. These resources were invaluable in giving myself the courage to actually start designing and publishing board games. Which I found out a few months later is much harder than it seems.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy following along on my completely transparent journey to publishing my first game. These will be written in a reflective format looking back on at a month to month progression of how I got here today.
Thank you so much for reading, I would love to hear how you started out in the wonderful world of tabletop games in the comments!
