‘Existential’ Art by author

Live, live, live your life

with ardent fervor,

and inexplicable awe,

With bliss and happiness,

With sorrow and pain.

Like a river flowing to the ocean, showering rain back to the lakes,

Like the seedlings from the trees, to grow and wither into the soil,

Like a fish to eat, to be devoured and reborn.

Live, live, live your life

To suffer when you sin,

To rage when betrayed,

To love when loved,

To howl when pained,

To grieve when lost,

To long when desired,

And, to joy when celebrated.

Live, live, live your life

With unconditional love

and unapologetic self,

To feel the yūgen of this existence.

Until the time comes,

Until your time comes,

Then wait and listen.

Inspired from Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse.

There is no English word for a type of feeling which the Japanese call yūgen, and we can only understand by opening our minds to situations in which Japanese people use the word […] ‘To watch the sun sink behind a flower-clad hill, to wander on and on in a huge forest without thought of return, to stand upon the shore and gaze after a boat that disappears behind distant islands, to contemplate the flight of wild geese seen and lost among the clouds.’ (Seami) All these are yugen, but what have they in common?~ Alan Watts
