Have you ever been to a city that is intoxicating? A city where there are no limits, where you can be anyone, do anything, and be everywhere?
The city is New York.
The last time I went to New York was to have dinner in the Twin Towers.Since then, I have not been able to come back. However, that horrible evil act made the city more welcoming and resilient, suddenly you felt compassion for your fellow commuters; you all shared the same nightmare but woke up together.
When I was a kid living in Connecticut, my mum would take us every weekend to Manhattan. We watched shows on Broadway, visited to Fao Schwarz to play with toys, and had frequent dinners at the Russian Tea Room. I remember a very different New York than the one in 2019. However, nothing could have prepared me for what I felt.
I felt belonging and loss at the same time.
I remember my childhood dream was to live in New York but as the years passed I forgot about my dream. I ended up moving to Canada and falling in love with Toronto. However, this recent visit has reignited my long lost dream of being part of the city of dreams…New York.
Through the following photos, I would like to share my experience of my trip with you. I did two walking tours of Manhattan and Brooklyn with Real New York Tours. They are a great tour company that rather than the traditional “look left and you can see” tour companies, you take the subway, talk about history, art and feel like a real New Yorker.
