“All my life, my heart has yearned for a thing I cannot name.”

There are so many great things out there in this world. Life is full of wonderful opportunities, vast adventures, and even more mistakes to make. It’s fascinating how endless the possibilities are. But the one inescapable thing that always happens to mock me is love. Not the stuff synonymous with vanity, but the immense giving of oneself to another. For most, the answer comes naturally. Being who I am, though, I can never settle on one absolute answer. What is it, exactly?

As Andre Breton puts it, “All my life, my heart has yearned for a thing I cannot name.” This brilliant concoction of words is something highly relatable for me. I can name pretty much every emotion I’ve ever felt, but love is something that baffles me. Yet, I yearn for it. How can you know you’re feeling the real thing? (Beyond infatuation, or sparks, or rainbows.) I feel it’s human nature to search for some higher thing to devote oneself to. For some, it’s religion; for others, it’s their career; but above all, we seem to have one divinity we value most, love. I know I do. I can’t quite help it. There is nothing more noble than feeling the “greatest” emotion humankind has been blessed with. I’d argue I’m cursed.

Hear me out. I’m not saying I’ve never loved. That would be absurd. I do not claim to be some dark, soulless person. There are many things I love: music, art, and writing, to name a few. I also love tennis and the color blue. (And rhyming.) But the love I’m yearning for is different. It’s the powerful kind. The kind of love that makes people fall to their knees and cry. I’m sure it’s out there somewhere. Just nowhere near me.

I apologize if you stumbled upon this article hoping to find an answer. This is one subject I proclaim to have no expertise in, thus the quick read. With that being said, I do not necessarily want to be lectured or analyzed either. I’ll find it. It’ll be my grand discovery, my Great Perhaps. For those of you in love, keep the secret dear to your hearts. For those of you like myself, keep seeking that noble treasure. I promise you, we’ll celebrate together someday. Cheers.
