If We Can Close Our Eyes to What We Don’t Want to See, Why Not Our Ears to What We Don’t Want to Hear?

Lately, I have been thinking about how we have the ability to shut our eyes, to turn away from things we don’t want to see, to ignore images that disturb us or don’t serve us right. Yet, when it comes to our ears, we don’t have that same chance. We cannot just decide not to hear. Even when we try to play tough, pretending not to listen, the words still seep in. Later, we find ourselves replaying them in our minds, dissecting them, sometimes even hurting from them.

Hearing is involuntary. Unlike sight, where we can look away, close our eyes, or even blindfold ourselves, sound will always force its way in. Voices, opinions, criticisms, gossip, they all find a path to our minds, whether we want them to or not. And sometimes, the things we hear goes farther than the things we see.

I don’t know if it is just me being overly sensitive lately, but there are conversations I wish I could unhear. Words that did not serve me, comments that made me feel small, or discussions that only brought negativity. If I could, I would erase them from memory. But we do not have that option.
