I know lots of engineers and MBAs who have failed at startups (and engineers with MBAs + PhDs ;). I know lots of people who have failed at startups in their ‘domain of expertise’ or perceived specialty areas.
Why?
- They don’t know how to lead (internal and external teams);
- They don’t know how to apply what they learn or what they see in the market.
Startups in all cases boil down to strength in leadership and applied learning capability, especially in a world as complex as ours. It doesn’t matter how good your ‘MVP’ is, and there are lots of great ideas out there… if you can’t execute in a truly integrated way, your chances are slim that you’ll succeed.
Cheers.
