10 Takeaways after 50 days in an accelerator

As promised, here are the top 10 aspects that have stood out for our team since starting at the Iowa Startup Accelerator on August 3rd:

10) Always Be Testing. Don’t just have an idea. Test it and make sure it works (we can’t stress this enough!).

9) Failure happens — assess & move on. If your test doesn’t cut it, move on. Don’t fret or get emotionally attached to your ideas.

8) Always Be Pitching. It’s on us to make sure people know what we do and why we do it. Pitch in front of different audiences constantly and learn how they respond. Your pitch should always be evolving.

7) Make the most of mentor time. After all, how often are you surrounded by 140 experts in marketing, finances, technology and more?

6) Listen to what you don’t want to hear. An essential element for every startup (albeit ego bruising).

5) Know your customer segments. Don’t try to make everyone like your product, find the people who will love it. They will become your most fervent fans and do the marketing for you.

4) Make bold moves. If you can take over Hallmark Holidays and make them more fun for everyone, do it! The world needs more pirate-influenced bouquets.

3) Stay competitive. Remember what got you into the accelerator in the first place. For us, it was our ability to improve an outdated industry.

2) Plan ahead. A 94-day cohort goes by quick, start thinking of what you need to do personally and professionally to keep momentum building when it all ends on Launch Day (ahem, tickets available now).

And finally…

1)Don’t fuck it up. There are thousands of startups who would love to be in our place with this opportunity. With that in mind, we can’t forget the How Factory Team’s advice from the cake they gave us on Day 1.

Overview

At Goquets, we’re working to become the easiest way to order flowers online. Stop wasting time scrolling through galleries only to see the flowers that are delivered look nothing like the photo you spent ages choosing. Tell us the details you actually care about — who it’s for, what the occasion is, and how much you want to spend and we’ll work with a local florist to build a beautiful, one-of-a-kind bouquet.

Stay tuned each week as we continue to talk about our experience going through a 3-month accelerator for Goquets at the Iowa Startup Accelerator in Cedar Rapids.
