If the greatest threat to political journalism is shrinking revenue, the Trump age will be both figuratively and literally a “golden” age. If, however, the greatest threat to political journalism is the shift from true journalism to stylistically-journalistic-political-entertainment, then we are seeing the death knell. It is not strictly, as is widely reported, that The People no longer trust The Media; it is that journalists increasingly view their job as pushing a narrative or view-point, not objectively informing. Journalists serve an important societal function when they source facts reputably; editorials are dime-a-dozen and one in the Wall Street Journal is no better than one in the Main Street Coffee Shop. Unfortunately, journalists’ self-control in front of an opportunity to editorialize is no better than that of the President they hate in front of Twitter.
