You Want the Good News or the Bad News?

I agree that news directors and editors should make more of an effort to produce positive stories, but the problem is that we’re storytellers and conflict is our raison d’etre. Human-interest stories are boring because they’re almost always presented as cotton candy. We need better storytelling. How did that do-good cop come to realize their previous methods were inflicting harm on the neighbors they were trying to protect? How did that officer confront their own biases? We can sell happy endings — look at the movies — but we need to sell conflict within those stories. Who the hell has time to do that in a 2:20 segment in the A bloc between a breaking news story and the tease for sports and weather before the first spot break?
