Technically speaking, the nation didn’t elect him, the electoral college did, which itself was the culmination of Project Redmap, a gerrymandering plan that was set in motion in 2011. There are actually projections from 2012 that show the outcome of this election, down to which swing states would swing red and by how much (IIRC, the projections were within 1–3 seats on all of them), as well as predicting that the President would take an electoral college win even if they lost the popular vote.
