Over to Los Angeles this week for a concert from the 2000–2001 season of the L.A. Philharmonic, conducted by Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen and featuring Radu Lupu in the Schumann Piano Concerto.
Also on the program is the World Premier of Franco Donatoni‘s Esa (In Cauda V), the last work Donatoni composed before his death in August of 2000. Finishing the concert is Beethoven’s Symphony Number 7.
Lupu is wonderful in the Schumann and the L.A. Phil does a nice turn with Beethoven, but the real plumb here is the Donatoni, which hasn’t been played very much since his death and which is a bright and fast-moving piece needing to find its way into the regular repertoire around the world.
All good stuff — and another reason why Salonen was so popular in Los Angeles during his tenure. He was always mixing up the program and introducing new or seldom performed works along with the tried-and-true. He kept the seasoned concertgoers enthused and he introduced newcomers to all the possibilities that Classical music offered.
Fortunately, the tradition of mixing it up continues with Gustavo Dudamel and this bodes well for Classical music continuing its relevance in the grand scheme of things — and has done wonders for the L.A. Phil.
Here is the playlist for the concert and what’s on the player:

Perfect Anti-Road Rage Wednesday music.
Turn it up and relax.
And while you’re doing that, consider chipping in a few bucks to keep Past Daily up and running and keeping the Archive (where all these recordings come from) safe from seizure. We’re in the middle of a financial crisis over increased rent and we have to come up with the necessary amount by the end of the month. The landlords are adamant (they’ve padlocked our doors) and they’ve given me to the end of the month. So if you can chip in, whatever amount it would be a huge blessing. Give what you can, but if you can’t and you still want to help, tell your friends. We need everybody and there’s not much time left; only 7 days.
So please click on the link below and make your pledge now before it’s too late.
