Paola fell in love with development back in kindergarten when she tried to move a Logo programming language turtle. In the present day tech environment she specializes in Java and Ruby on Rails, crafting projects in areas like Finance, Oil & Gas and Health Care. Paola enjoys photography and travels in order to find the perfect spots for her pictures. She also enjoys running, yoga, learning new languages and making desserts for her co-workers.

Where’s your hometown? — I’ve lived in San Jose, Costa Rica my entire life, just 5 minutes away from downtown.

Favorite place you’ve traveled to? — Mexico! It’s a magical environment that just captures you and makes you want to go back. Plus, the food is great too.

How many years have you worked in your field? — I’ve been developing for about 3 years.

How do you spend your free time? — I love to challenge myself. In my free time, my activities change depending on the season. For example, lately I’ve been running and doing yoga outside while it’s still warm out. Aside from exercising, I love to take photos and read. I am always looking for the next good novel.

What made you want to work at Gorilla Logic? — I wanted a change from bureaucratic companies and I found GL (or GL found me?). I did my research and was excited to hear about Gorilla’s unique culture and projects. Also, the location in Costa Rica makes the job even better.

Best advice when heading into an interview? — Don’t try to look like a smarty-pants. Instead, try to be humble and answer their questions. Also if you go into an interview nervous and worried, try to hide that. Don’t let them smell your fear :)

Best advice when meeting with a client? — Always smile and treat them as you would like to be treated. Remember that you are the company’s face and everything will depend on your attitude and actions.

Now that you have greater insight on the world (maybe;)), what would you go back and tell your 18 year old self? — Well, I would tell myself to be patient and that everything is going to happen as it’s supposed to.

What motivated you to pursue working in your current field? — I’ve always loved puzzles, and when I started coding I noticed how similar the two were, with the exception that coding could solve a problem in many ways, depending on the approach. So, ever since I worked on my first app, I knew it was for me. Every new project provides a different experience and you can walk away feeling good, knowing the impact your work will have on others. A new project means a new challenge, and I love to be challenged. It feels like I was meant to be a Software Developer! :D

What qualities make someone successful in the tech world? — Being a good team player who is willing to help others and wants to build upon the knowledge and skills they already have.
