Snapchat’s getting real (time). What say you, Twitter?

I didn’t see it, but yesterday there was a ‘Je Suis Charlie’ Our Story on Snapchat.

Interesting, because Snapchat has typically stuck with planned, calendar, entertainment-focused events for the Our Story feature — & Twitter has been the place for these real-time moments.

That said, with Snapchat becoming the default camera app for more & more people every day, it’s not surprising to see them enter the real-time space.

Coincidentally, Twitter is set to introduce their video product in a few weeks. Users will be able to shoot, edit, & post video content natively through the platform.

You’d think that as a public forum where content is permanent, Twitter would have an advantage over Snapchat. The user behavior is already there, for people to use the platform to share real-time events. Video should be welcomed.

It will be exciting (at least for geeks like me) to see how Twitter defends themselves here. One look at their blog & it’s easy to see how much they care about events & moments. Will they simply let Snapchat join in? Will they introduce an ‘Our Story’-like feature? (Although #hashtags are kind of similar as-is, right? A collection of content around a given topic?)

Do they even feel threatened?

For me, they can co-exist. They serve different purposes, they are different tools in the… tool belt. What I’m really curious about is, which one will people reach for first?

01.13.15 Update

So, Facebook has just introduced (at least, this is the first I’m seeing it) ‘Live Feed.’ When you click into a Trending topic on the right nav bar on your News Feed, a feed appear below the top post showing live posts about the given topic. (This is not yet a mobile-friendly feature.)

The learning here, really, is that all platforms have something to gain for being the (or at least “a”) place people go to talk about things that are happening, when they’re happening.

We should expect these types of product evolutions across the board.

Big ups to some smart coworkers (VaynerMedia, holler!) for raising points that influenced thoughts in this article. Curi0us to hear your thoughts! Hit me up.
