All cycling, all the time

The day started out lazy — streaming the last few hours of the Olympic Men’s Road Race live. What a race! Thrills, spills, you name it. The coverage was ho hum, but race itself ended up being quite a nail biter. It just goes to show that while luck can sometimes be a factor, nothing beats perseverance and tenacity.

I was also excited to see Peter Sagan won a mountain bike race in Grand Targhee today — for him a training ride on the long way down to Rio. This guy can do it all! If he wins a medal, the long established hierarchy in mountain bike racing is going to lose their collective minds. Besides, what’s not to like?

Anyhow, with the soreness of the week now finally behind me, I was itching to get out on a nice ride and enjoy the rest of the day. G texted me and we met up a for a three hour tour around town. He must’ve had a triple espresso before the ride, since he was hopping around and motivated to throw down some watts, while I was feeling a bit more reserved. No matter, sometimes you just have to roll with it.

Here’s a neat visualization of the ride, courtesy of relive.cc (full link here if the embed doesn’t work):

I think the recent change up in my training has me in a serious muscle confusion phase — or at least I hope it is nothing more than a phase. While G was talking about doing speed work and such, I was suffering like an animal on the rollers and gritting my teeth, trying valiantly to take my turns and not be a total wheel sucker.

I’m pretty tired from the effort, but in a good way. Now it’s time to get some sleep — the plan is to hit the trail at o’dark hundred and get a long run in.
