Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11

This article focuses on installation of both R and RStudio for rich powerful graphics to intertwine with R. This installation was performed on Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11 version. Initial navigation to the website http://cran.r-project.org/ displays a bevy of R distributions for various operating systems such as Linux, Windows, and Mac OS. The initial section in the website points to each distribution. Upon clicking the version for Mac OS X, it leads to a display section of multiple packages available for several versions of Mac OS X version. As of this discussion, the current package version is shown as R 3.2.2 package dubbed Fire Safety for Mac OS X. Downloading the package shows a size of 72.5 MB with file extension .pkg. The first step of the pop up shows Introduction screen with continue button. Upon clicking the continue button a read me section appears with a standard warning, that the version is applicable for Mac OS X Mavericks or higher, in this case Mac OS X El Capitan 10.11. The next section displays EULA for general public distribution.

After accepting the license agreement, a warning pops up that the installation will consume around 158.5 MB space on the computer. Clicking the install button pops up window for Mac OS X administrator password. After entering the password for installation, the total installation time shows as one minute with a progress bar indicator multiple steps and final step shows as scripts packages are currently being run. Ubuntu Linux Desktop 14.04. Desktop

Similar to the Mac OS X, navigating to http://cran.r-project.org/ and choosing the installation for Linux shows multiple options for debian, redhat, suse, and Ubuntu versions. Since I am running Ubuntu Linux 14.04 Desktop on Parallels of Mac OS X, choosing Ubuntu version leads to installation instructions. However, the installation process is different. Running the command sudo apt with option of –get install r-base prompts to configure the package manually. Running another command sudo dpkg with –configure option with –a performed the installation on Ubuntu Linux. However, the packages have to be installed independently for Ubuntu Linux. After, running the sudo apt –get command with install r-base-dev installs all the packages into Ubuntu Linux. Once the installation is confirmed, just running capital R on Linux terminal shows that R is console is working.

Similar to RStudio installation on Mac OS, Linux has the file for Ubuntu. Downloading the file directly shows in Ubuntu Software Center, clicking the installation begins the installation process with progress indicator installing. Administration password is asked for installation and resumes the state of installing. R was installed successfully. I installed RStudio directly from Rstudio.com for Ubuntu Linux 64-bit operating system.
