Its a pity that the US is so used to the lower class and underprivileged not having adequate healthcare. Common perspective is “why should we pay for someone else's healthcare”? However, the cost for not supporting those who can’t pay for medical treatment is paid for through social unrest and increased insurance premiums. How we treat the poor of our nations determines the quality of the nation overall, in the long run. The alternative is pouring more cash into policing, detention and fixing problems.
In Australia we have what you refer to as socialist healthcare — we call it Medicare. We have shortcomings too and plenty of room for improvement. We also have private health cover which gives extra benefits for hospital and preventative health services. Fortunately we have gun control which helps minimising social unrest.
There’s only two problems I see with Obamacare: the brand name and the negative push back from the Republicans. Although Obama is one of the best modern presidents the US has had, having his name for the medical program is an immediate set back because many would blame him on things not being perfect across the board. The Republicans prevented Obamacare on delivering full advantages by blocking policy and pushing out negative messages to press. Mass audiences are too influenced by brief sound bites and propaganda from media such as Fox because they don’t have time or inclination to research and consider other points of view.
