Design thinking: It is an ideology supported by an accompanying process.
Design-thinking ideology: It asserts that a hands-on, user-centric approach to problem solving can lead to innovation, and innovation can lead to differentiation and a competitive advantage.
Design-thinking process: It is a hands-on, user-centric approach, and comprises 6 distinct phases: empathize, define, ideate, prototype, test, and implement.

Storytelling: Design Thinking is Changing My Life for the Better
Design thinking is a mindset and a process. Following the process and developing the mindset can help you approach to any problem solving, no matter the issue or challenge is caused by work or life.
Here I want to share my latest interview experience and tell you how the design thinking changed my life, in a good way.
I prepared to take a UX design program for shifting my career from graphic design to UX design this year. Before the courses start, I need to finish a 35–40 hour prep-course includes a curated selection of readings, tutorials, resources and also require to submit 3 design projects. The last step for registration successfully is to pass an interview.Finally, I got an email from the school coordinator and he scheduled me for a Skype interview with an educator.
I have few on-line interviewing experience before, I have to say the interview for me is a challenge. “If it is a challenge, a problem, could I try to fix it by using design thinking what I have learned?” I asked myself. “Why not?!” I got the reply. I started my design thinking journey as below:
End-user: Interviewer — Educator
Product: The presentation I will deliver
Challenge: I have no idea what to say during the interview
Step1: Empathize — — Conduct research in order to develop knowledge about interview.
On the one side, I send an e-mail to the coordinator to collect the information how long the interview will be? What kinds of questions do the interviewer will ask normally? On the other side, I started to do some research online and also asked my husband the Skype interview he experienced before.
Step2: Define — — Combine all my research and observe where the interview’ problems exist.
After receiving feedback and analyzing research, I narrowed down my interview problem to PROCESS — how to present my design process of the projects clearly and effectively.
Step3: Ideate — — Brainstorm a range of crazy, creative ideas that address the interviewer’s needs identified in the define phase.
I wrote my ideas on the sticky notes and posted on the wall, such as: design thinking as a guidance, emphasize the importance of process, research methods, UX design terminology, etc.
Step4: Prototype — — Build real, tactile representations for a subset of my ideas.
I started by outlining my presentation of design process on my prep course assignments. This way I find that it can clarify the message, make it easier to present.
Step5: Test — — Return to my interviewer for feedback.
When my interview really began, I talked to the educator my work and study background. I explained to her my process of the 3 design artworks. She gave me some suggestions on how to improve my design in the future and also asked me 2 questions to test my soft skills.
Step6: Implement — — Put the vision into effect.
From the Test step I got a lesson that I need to prepare some answers of the soft skills questions, such as: How to Answer Behavioural Questions About Conflict. Besides that, I found an interview is a two-way street. The educator asked me questions to learn about me and my skills. In return, I need to prepare questions to ask her about the course, and the school in order to be sure that this is the right choice for me.
Even though it is not perfect, some mistakes I made in the whole interviewing process, however, I found I can face the problem by using design thinking, not like before. Design thinking as my new mindset gives me courage, energy and confidence to tackle challenges.
