Musical Elitism Is Bullshit.
Here’s a broad statement that almost no one is going to agree with: no music is bad.
When I say that, I don’t mean that all music is pleasant, I just think it isn’t bad. Fundamentally, music is expression, and expression is just communication of experience. Hence, no music is bad. (Wow, that was some really pretentious wording right then.)
What I mean is the way you see the world affects how you relay it back to people, and one way that’s shown is through music.
I do agree that not all music is easy listening, because if I thought that was the case, I would listen to Pierce The Veil while doing my homework. However, all music deserves equal chance and recognition. Pierce The Veil is a great example. I can guarantee you that it’s not hard to find someone who absolutely despises screamo. They probably find it to be ugly and tough on the ears and basically just a mass of untalented bullshit.
And on one hand, I agree with them. Pierce The Veil is hard to listen to. They certainly aren’t pretty. But Pierce The Veil, and any band like them, are kind of my heroes.
Why? Because their experiences can be summed up in raging guitar and extremely intense singing. If bands like Pierce The Veil can write screaming love songs, then just imagine how the love actually felt. The artist must have experienced the relationship they’re writing about in such a way that they felt the best outlet was shredding and yelling. The way they interpret their experiences is so intense that I can’t help but feel admiration.
This applies for me to all music. Like, most people I know hate country. But who are you to judge if someone perceives the world with a country twang? Or pop music. Just because a lot of people like a song it doesn’t make said song illegitimate. It probably just makes a lot of people happy. Don’t hate on music just because it makes a bunch of people happy.
In short, don’t hate music because it’s unattractive. Consider that it’s someone’s interpretation of a happening, and just because their perception varies from yours, you shouldn’t dislike it.
I mean, try it, at least. You never know.
