To a certain degree, I’m predisposed to this: I’m both hyperlexic and synesthesiac. As a child, I was absolutely fascinated by letters and numbers — their shapes, the sounds they made, the way they seemed to dance off a page or a chalkboard. To me, letters and words have notes and colors — as do sentences, paragraphs and whole pieces. (This is a purple piece.) I don’t write so much as I paint, play, draw or sculpt. My goal as a writer, rhythmically, is to distill that rush of energy I get from the sound and color of words and letters into what you see on your screen.
