How I found Islam

Born in Lynwood, CA, on April 2nd, 1981, my early years were shaped by a devout Catholic upbringing in a predominantly Hispanic community. Rituals like baptism, first communion, and a Quinceañera marked my journey. However, at the age of 15, a sense of unease prompted me to delve into research, seeking a connection with Catholicism. Despite efforts, the outcome was resentment. At 15, I formally resigned from Catholicism by writing to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, citing concerns including articles of bloodshed, murder, the role of the pope, and instances of child abuse. This decision marked a pivotal moment in my spiritual journey.

The Kabbalah Years

My exploration led me to “God is a Verb” by Rabbi Cooper, igniting my fascination with Kabbalah. Engaging in Jewish studies, I immersed myself in the teachings at the Kabbalah Centre in Los Angeles, attending classes led by Michael Berg for a significant 15-year period. Meditation and practice, symbolized by the red string around my left wrist, became integral to my daily life.

However, the Kabbalah Centre’s scrutiny, facing investigation by the IRS for fraud, prompted a reevaluation. Despite continued personal practice outside the center, a sense of discomfort lingered. While closer to my truth than Catholicism, I found myself questioning the alignment with my spiritual journey.
