Want to know what’s new in Microsoft Teams Room 4.9.12.0? There are two main updates listed in the Microsoft release notes here.

Microsoft Teams only mode is now available in application settings, so you don’t need to set up a Skype for Business account anymore. In this mode, devices signed in to Teams only mode join Skype for Business meetings as a guest user.

Fix for HDMI audio causing lower call volume. HDMI audio feature is automatically enabled for all devices with application build 4.9.12.0.

Teams Only Mode

Let’s look at the two features. The Teams Only mode has been a long-requested feature. As many organisations have removed or retired their Skype for Business servers, the Microsoft Teams Room still signed into the service. If it couldn’t reach the service via DNS or validating certificates, it would have an error on the console. This did not look good, even when you only did Teams meetings. Well now the issue has gone away. See below

Once you make this change, the system will restart and will now not try to sign into Skype for Business Server or Online. Also, in the Teams Admin Center (TAC), it shows it appropriately too.

Rather than going to the individual device, you can also set Microsoft Teams only mode via TAC. Just edit the settings and the changes will be applied once the device is restarted. You can leave it until the 2am reboot or force a reboot from the TAC to make it happen now.

That’s all there is to this feature. Nice and easy to setup/reconfigure. When the device needs to connect to a Skype for Business meeting when it is in Teams Only mode, it will join as a guest. Below is a device

As you can see, it shows the Skype Logo next to the meeting and when you join that meeting, you are placed into the lobby. This is because you are now a guest rather than a trusted user of that domain.

The other thing to note about the Teams Only mode is that when you press New Meeting, there is no Enter URI in the bottom left corner. In the past, this would take the system into “Skype Mode” to make a Skype call, internally or federated. This was used in the past if you wanted to call another service that had a Skype Edge, such as a Pexip Virtual Meeting Room. Below is what the New Meeting Screen looks like now. You many need to update any training documentation.

HDMI Audio

The other feature released in this update was the re-introduction of HDMI Content sharing with Audio. It was released previously, but when systems were upgraded to Windows 20H2, it introduced an audio ducking issue, which meant the main volume was lowered. This has now been resolved in this release.

How to get the update

Your Microsoft Teams Room will automatically get this update as the system checks for updates every night at 2am. Microsoft will roll this out around the globe over the next few weeks. If you want to manually update a system for testing, then you can follow this method I have demonstrated here.
